Why Your NRS Receipt Needs a QR Code (And How to Fix It in Minutes)

Let’s cut the jargon

A customer in Ikeja just paid you. They ask, casually: “This receipt get QR?” You freeze. The paper looks fine. Your WhatsApp looks fine. But NRS doesn’t grade on vibes — they care that the document can be verified.

That’s what cryptographic keys do. They digitally sign your documents so NRS can embed a verification QR code. Customer scans it. Auditor scans it. Done — the document proves it came from your business profile, not a photocopy from last December.

No active keys? You can still record some B2C receipts on ZoboLedger. But that receipt won’t carry a compliant QR until your public key and certificate are on file.

Keys aren’t optional paperwork. They’re the difference between a receipt NRS trusts and one that looks incomplete when someone checks.

When you actually need them

• B2B / B2G invoices: keys are required for compliant issuance with QR verification. Corporate buyers notice. Government buyers definitely notice.
• B2C receipts: you can issue with “Continue without QR” to record now; QR appears only after keys are uploaded. Handy when the queue is long — not a forever plan.

How to generate keys on NRS

Five minutes if the portal behaves:

1. Log in to the NRS e-invoice portal.
2. Go to My Account → API Credentials → Manage Cryptographic Keys.
3. Generate or export your key bundle (JSON), or separate public key and certificate files.

One hard rule: keep your private key private. Only upload the public key and certificate through ZoboLedger’s secure link. Never paste a private key in chat, email, or WhatsApp. That’s like texting your ATM PIN to the group.

Upload keys from WhatsApp

1. Tap “Upload Crypto Keys” in WhatsApp.
2. Open the secure, time-limited link ZoboLedger sends you.
3. Upload the JSON bundle — or the public key and certificate separately.
4. Return to WhatsApp. Once keys are active, new receipts and invoices can carry NRS-compliant QR codes.

Use only the upload link ZoboLedger sends you. Third-party upload pages are a hard no — if it didn’t come from your chat, don’t touch it.

Still no QR?

Before you blame the portal (or your life):

• Confirm key activation finished on NRS.
• Confirm your NRS provider is set to PASCA.
• If setup is incomplete, finish E-invoice setup, then retry the upload.
